Sarah and I weren't seeing a lot of changes in the wound - yeah, I finally broke down and took a look at the photos she took every day. Gross. I'd moved up my follow-up appointment to Tuesday instead of Wednesday. We had a 2:30 appointment and a 3:30 appointment with the surgeon. First I saw the nurse at the "Wound Center" again. She, by the way, was one of the most competent and reassuring people we worked with the entire time. Then we met with the wound specialist - a different one this time. He, too, seemed extremely competent. He reassured us that the wound, even though it wasn't healing quickly, was healing. He discussed with us the reasoning behind oral antibiotics instead of IV's, and asked that I still stay home from work to give the wound time to heal well. I've been out of work for 4 full weeks now.
It's hard calling the boss each week to tell him, "Sorry, the doctor says I'm out another week," but what choice did I have?
Anyway, Supposedly, the wound - now known to be infected with both a Staph Aureus and a Gram Negative bacteria - had satisfied this doctor enough that he sheduled me another appointment for the following week, and left it at that. I love how the doctors try to avoid admitting that yeah, the infections probably DID come from the O.R. But they smile sheepishly instead. "Oh, you can pick these infections up anywhere..."
