I went back to see my doctor again, two weeks after surgery, so that he could look at the wound and make sure it was healing properly. He opened the cast (I requested that they change the cast, because of the smell).

They took the staples out, and then it looked like this.

There was a little bit of pus coming out, so the doctor put me a Levaquin for a week and asked to see me again the following week... Why didn't he culture it? Why didn't he associate the smell - which didn't really smell like sweat - with the staph infection? Subsequent doctors did, but it was too late, then. What a shame it wasn't caught here, reopened and debrided, irrigated, and fixed. BTW, it wasn't ever debrided and irrigated until 10 weeks later when it came back lower on the heel. More in next post.
